10 'Must-See' Films

First challenge completed: I've watched ten of the films people say you have to see before you die!

Following Empire's 100 Greatest Movies list, I picked films that were readily available on Netflix or Amazon Prime and spent some of my free time working through them. My film repertoire is shockingly limited, so at least now I'm hoping I will gain a bit more kudos in my social circles...

Here's what I watched:

1. GoodFellas (1990)
I'm not really one for mob/gangster style films, yet they seem to feature heavily on any of these 'must-see' lists. Didn't rate this highly.

2. The Princess Bride (1987)
I had heard that this was a bit of a cult classic, and I absolutely adored it! Witty and heartwarming, a general classic fairytale.

3. Good Will Hunting (1997)
Oh, man. I cried a lot at this one. Great story, and I loved the relationship between Matt Damon and Robin Williams' characters.

4. Inception (2010)
I'm so late to the game with this one, I know. Once I got my head around the different layers of reality, I really enjoyed the ambiguous ending.

5. The Social Network (2010)
I'm not sure what I was doing in 2010 but I missed this too. It lowered my opinion of Zuckerberg even further.

6. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Not a big horror fan but the suspense and relationship between Lecter and Starling was great. Still, I watched with the lights on...

7. Schindler's List (1993)
This is a long, long film, but fully worth it. Having recently read Heather Morris' The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this film further added to my understanding of the persecution of the Jews during WWII. The final scene at the real Schindler's grave left me in bits.

8. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Another gangster film, although I enjoyed the story more in this one. A lot of unnecessary blood-filled scenes though!

9. Jaws (1975)
A true classic but again, just not my type of film.

10. Taxi Driver (1976)
Pretty compelling story. Not my usual choice of film but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I'm glad to have ticked off my first challenge, and I think this will now push me to watch more films - especially over the winter when the weather's rubbish!
